The car was previewed as a concept car at the 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit and is the fifth generation Legacy that features technologies previously not seen in the Legacy range.

Most of the familiar stuff like the boxer engines and Subaru's symmetrical AWD will be current with the new model.

The US market, will introduce the new Legacy to the public not long after the show, three engines variants will be available. Starting with a naturally-aspirated 2.5i producing 125kW and 230Nm of torque. Transmission options are a 6-speed manual and the new Subaru Lineartronic CVT.

Last but not least the 3.6R with a 5-speed automatic replaces the old 3.0-litre. It makes 188kW and 335Nm maximum torque.

The new Legacy is 35 mm longer, 80 mm higher and 90 mm wider than the current car. Taking care of the front end of the car is  a MacPherson-type strut suspension and as for the rear a new double-wishbone suspension system is mounted to the rear. The 2.5i receives 16-inch wheels and 205/60R16 while the 2.5GT comes with some sweet looking 18-inch alloys and 225/45R18 tyres. While On the Legacy 3.6-liter models, 17-inch alloy wheels with 225/50R17 tires are standard.

All models are equipped with a standard 4-wheel disc Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), combined with Subaru's Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD). Further control is offered by Subaru's Brake Assist safety system, which is available on all models.

A new electronic parking brake eliminates the traditional parking brake handle and allows for more storage space in the center console. An electronic Hill Holder System in the parking brake is automatically activated if the vehicle stops on any hill with a slope of more than 5%.
